Beijing and Hong Kong protesters poles apart on lessons to be drawn

Hong Kong’s young would-be revolutionaries have, at least for now, mostly put away their umbrellas, symbol of the pro-democracy protest. So what lessons can we draw from the spectacular events of the last few weeks?

The most inscrutable reaction, but by far the most important, is that of the leadership in Beijing.

It is very unlikely President Xi Jinping and his comrades will conclude they need to provide more freedoms to people living in the former British colony.
