N Korea circulates UN resolution defending human rights record

North Korea has made a rare move to defend its human rights record, circulating a draft UN resolution amid growing international condemnation of rampant violations in the secretive communist state.

The country’s UN mission on Wednesday showed its draft resolution to about 60 diplomats at a closed-door meeting, signalling its willingness to engage in a dialogue about human rights with the international community.

Questions and comments were sought, with the country saying it has “nothing to hide”. In the text of the resolution, North Korea repeated its claim that the country was making a big effort to improve its human rights and that the issue should not be abused for political purposes, Seoul’s state-run Yonhap News said on Thursday.
