Political scandals claim scalps of two Japanese ministers

Scandals over political funding and donations have ensnared two of Japan’s newly appointed female ministers, dealing a double blow to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s efforts to revive the economy by promoting more women.

Analysts warn the resignations of the trade and justice ministers could also damp the strong public support that Mr Abe has enjoyed since his return to the premiership in 2012, just as he faces a divisive decision on whether to push ahead with a further rise in national sales tax.

Trade and industry minister Yuko Obuchi, the 40-year-old daughter of a former prime minister, resigned early on Monday amid allegations the her support groups misused political funds.
