Comet probe ‘sniffed’ organic molecules

The Philae lander “sniffed” organic molecules after it touched down on the Comet 67P last week, according to a preliminary analysis of some of the data the fridge-sized probe returned to Earth before running out of power.

Scientists at the European Space Agency said that more analysis was needed to establish how complex the carbon-containing compounds are that were detected by an instrument that sampled the thin atmosphere around the comet.

They said it was not yet clear whether these included amino acids, the complex compounds that make up proteins, which are the basic building blocks of life.
