Luxury watch cited in China fraud case

The legal dispute between Citigroup and Mercuria, the commodities trading house, helped shed fresh light Thursday on the businessman at the centre of a suspected warehousing fraud in China that left global banks facing hundreds of millions of dollars of potential losses.

Georgie Baker, a banker at Citi, told the High Court in London she had been given a luxury watch from Chen Jihong, founder of Dezheng Resources, on her birthday in late 2012, two years before she joined the US bank.

Asked by lawyers acting for Mercuria if the gift was an expensive watch worth around £10,000 Ms Baker replied: “I believe it was, yes my Lord, yes.”
