The Chinese manufacturing engine contracted this month, breaking a six-month streak of gains, according to a private measure.
HSBC said its "flash" estimate of China's manufacturing sector produced a reading of 49.5 in December, falling from 50.0 last month. Economists were anticipating a score of 49.8.
The last time the index said the manufacturing sector was shrinking was in May.
