Smog film emerges as breath of fresh air for online audience

A Chinese documentary critical of the country’s dense smog is generating a huge online response, suggesting greater official tolerance for discussion of China’s pollution problems.

Since its release on Saturday, Under the Dome , produced by Chai Jing, a former anchor at state broadcaster China Central Television, has had more than 136m views on Tencent’s video portal and sparked vibrant discussion online.

The enthusiastic response to the 104-minute film — and the fact government censors have permitted it to stream on big internet portals — suggest officials want to harness public pressure to build political support for tougher measures to combat the problem.
