China’s PLA dismisses US hack accusation

China has hit back at allegations that its army was behind a recent hacking attack on a US-based internet domain registry, dismissing the accusations as “groundless” and insisting it is a victim rather than perpetrator in the recent global surge in cyber warfare.

“The accusations of the Chinese army’s participation in cyber attacks are nothing new, and they are completely groundless,” the defence ministry said on Friday in a statement to the Financial Times.

The response follows revelations that the US Federal Bureau of Investigation is examining possible Chinese military involvement in a cyber attack on Register.com, a subsidiary of web.com, which manages more than 1.4m website addresses for businesses worldwide.
