Choi Chi-yin has worked on construction sites in Hong Kong for more than four decades. While the 65-year-old could comfortably retire, he feels compelled to keep plying his trade as a fire safety specialist.
“I thought about retiring but I can’t retire now,” says Mr Choi, while coaching a teenage apprentice. “There’s a shortage of new workers in the industry, so my boss wants me to train apprentices first.”
With an ageing population, a low birth rate and a young generation reluctant to become blue-collar workers in this status-conscious city, Hong Kong is running low on construction workers.
