Political reform package rejected in Hong Kong

Pro-Beijing government officials staged a walk-out from Hong Kong's Legislative Council, leaving pan-democrats to carry the vote in their absence.

The pan-democrat lawmakers rejected a bill that would require the former British colony's chief executive candidates to be nominated by a 1,200 member committee, largely made up of pro-establishment figures.

After a two-day meeting, none of the pro-democrat lawmakers voted for the bill, which comes ahead of the 2017 election. Eight pro-Beijing lawmakers voted in support, while the rest left the chamber, according to the South China Morning Post.
