France slams US over claims it spied on presidents

François Hollande has protested to Barack Obama over allegations that US National Security Agency listened to the French president’s phone conversations.

The French president telephoned his US counterpart for “an update on the principles that must govern relations between allies on the matter of intelligence”, the Elysée palace said. The Elysée said French authorities had already discussed the alleged espionage with their American counterparts in 2013 and in February 2014, during Mr Hollande’s trip to Washington.
