UK under fire for visa curb on dissident Chinese artist

Members of parliament, campaigners and leading arts figures have attacked a decision by the UK government to deny a six-month business visa to Ai Weiwei, the Chinese dissident artist, preventing him from visiting London at the same time as President Xi Jinping.

Salman Rushdie, the novelist, led criticism of the government yesterday after Mr Ai said the British embassy had restricted his entry visa to 20 days for failing to declare a criminal conviction.

The decision means that the artist, who was abducted, detained and interrogated by Chinese security agents but never charged, will miss part of his exhibition at the Royal Academy in London from September to December.
