Hungary set to use army against influx at border

Hungary is set to deploy the army at the EU’s frontiers as part of a military response to Europe’s largest migration crisis since the second world war.

Janos Lazar, a Hungarian minister, said the government had discussed a possible military build-up after police reports that 2,500 migrants penetrated the border with Serbia on Tuesday. One official said the numbers were the highest in Hungary’s history.

Mr Lazar’s statement came days after Bulgaria dispatched troops to its border with Turkey, prompting criticism from human rights groups that warned against a militarised response by European countries.
