At least 717 people were killed in a stampede at Mina, near the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, in the worst disaster at the annual hajj pilgrimage for 25 years.
More than 800 people were injured in the crush, Saudi civil defence officials said. It occurred as pilgrims were making their way to a ritual commemorating the Prophet Abraham’s “stoning of the devil”. Dangerous crowding during the event frequently causes stampedes and crushes.
The civil defence directorate said 4,000 of its staff and hundreds of rescue vehicles and ambulances attended the scene. Videos circulating on social media showed dozens of bodies covered by shrouds.
