Okinawa governor revokes licence for new US base

The governor of Okinawa has officially revoked construction permits for a new US military base on the southern island as an issue that has plagued US-Japan relations for more than a decade flares up again.

Takeshi Onaga said he was cancelling his predecessor’s permission to build a new US Marine Corps air base in the picturesque Henoko Bay. The base would replace one at Futenma in the densely populated south of Okinawa.

The central government is now likely to take Okinawa to court, further delaying the base, with Henoko remaining an open sore on relations between Okinawa and Tokyo as well as Japan and the US.
