War, drugs and deals: Sino-British encounters

China has a long and frequently unhappy history with Britain, with many Chinese learning from an early age of British-led colonial oppression, especially in the 19th century.

The two countries went to war twice over the opium trade — with the first in 1840 said to have initiated a “century of humiliation” — and from then until 1997 the territory of Hong Kong was British-ruled.
