Twitter tally at People’s Daily does not add up, say researchers

The People’s Daily is one of the most successful broadsheets on social media but it turns out that the Communist party’s soft power champion may be as reliant on fakes as many other Chinese industries.

More than half the 1.17m Twitter users following the English-language account of the flagship paper are virtually inactive and likely to be fake, according to research by the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Building global soft power is an express goal of the party and state-owned media groups such as the People’s Daily are at the vanguard of peddling influence overseas.
