Xi Jinping defends China’s right to ‘sovereign’ internet

China’s President Xi Jinping on Wednesday defended China’s right to a “sovereign” internet in a speech that underlines China’s increasingly assertive efforts to justify online censorship.

Mr Xi, delivering the keynote speech at the second annual Global Internet Conference, held in the southern city of Wuzhen, made the case for a “a multilateral, democratic and transparent global internet governance system”.

“No country should pursue cyber hegemony,” he said, going on to defend “the right of individual countries to independently choose their own model of cyberspace governance”.
