Tsai Ing-wen wins Taiwan’s presidential election

Opposition leader Tsai Ing-wen has been elected as Taiwan’s next president, with her Democratic Progressive party on course to secure a majority in the legislature for the first time in a landslide election that will disturb Beijing.

Ms Tsai claimed victory in the presidential and legislative elections on Saturday night shortly after her rival, Eric Chu of the ruling Kuomintang, or Nationalist party, conceded defeat.

“We will put political polarisation behind us and look forward to new era of politics in Taiwan,” she said, her voice croaking after a long campaign. “Thank you for entrusting us to govern this country.”
