China starts database of living Buddhas

China’s government has launched an online database of Tibetan “living Buddhas” as part of what critics view as a broader struggle to control the legacy of the exiled Dalai Lama.

The database, listing 870 government-certified reincarnations in mainland China, was unveiled on Monday by the Buddhist Association of China, which operates under the auspices of the ruling Communist party.

The list is an effort to “regulate reincarnation issues for living Buddhas”, said the Xinhua state news agency, using a Chinese term for reincarnated lamas, known as trulku in Tibetan.
