Britain is preparing for record numbers of visitors for China’s lunar new year but there are signs the year of the monkey will not bring the prosperity UK businesses are hoping for.
Since the lunar new year, one of the world’s oldest festivals, moved beyond Chinatown and into London’s Trafalgar Square a decade ago, the UK’s Spring Festival celebrations have become some of the largest outside Asia.
Tourism from China has shot up as a result and Chinese visitors have become the UK’s fastest-growing travel market. According to VisitBritain, the national tourist agency, numbers were 70 per cent higher in 2014 than in 2006 — at 185,061 compared with 107,275.
