Brussels airport hit by twin blasts

More than a dozen people were killed in a series of explosions in Brussels on Tuesday morning, with two blasts at the airport and another at a metro station in the heart of the EU quarter an hour later.

The first two blasts occurred in the Zaventem airport departure hall shortly before 8am (local time), according to Belgian media. The airport has been evacuated, all flights have been cancelled and the Belgian authorities have activated their “emergency plan”.

At least 13 people died and 35 were wounded in the airport explosions, according to local media reports citing Belgian prosecutors. Local media also reported 10 killed in a blast at Maalbeek station in central Brussels.
