The craze took off when Chinese actress Zhang Xinyu posted a photo of herself on social media with Bobbie, a purple teddy bear stuffed with lavender, with the racy tagline: “The ideal bedtime companion for a cold Shanghai night”.
The celebrity endorsement in mid-2013 helped spawn Bobbie-mania, transforming the sweet-smelling Tasmanian teddy into a Sino-superstar, catching Bridestowe Lavender Estate off their guard.
“China gobbled us up,” says Robert Ravens, who owns the estate, one of the biggest private lavender farms in the world, where Bobbie is made. “Bobbie suddenly became one of the most widely recognised brands in China, with women scrambling to get their hands on the bear.”
