Chinese officials failed to use their entire allowances for overseas travel, entertainment and vehicles last year, amid fear over President Xi Jinping’s corruption crackdown and austerity drive.
The finance ministry said on its website that the government spent Rmb5.4bn ($835m) of the Rmb6.3bn budget for these perks during 2015. Traditionally, officials have taken it upon themselves to ensure that they use their entire annual budget.
“Various departments fully implemented the strict saving requirements by the party, which strictly controlled and compressed official spending in those three areas,” the ministry said. “Some outbound delegations were delayed, foreign receptions were curtailed and the official expenditure on vehicles was cut.”
