In May 1966, student militants in Beijing launched what seemed at the time to be a localised campaign, putting up wall posters that praised Mao Zedong and denounced their university’s administrators for harbouring anti-socialist ideas. Three months later the group, now swollen in numbers and known as the “Red Guards”, poured into Tiananmen Square en masse to receive their revered leader’s blessing.
