President Barack Obama met the Dalai Lama at the White House on Wednesday despite a warning from Beijing not to host the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader.
The White House said that the meeting was “personal” in nature and reflected the president’s admiration for the Dalai Lama’s spiritual teachings. There was no press coverage of the event.
The meeting comes amid considerable tension between the US and China over the South China Sea and a number of economic issues.
