As rain fell on the opening day of Disney’s eagerly awaited $5.5bn theme park in Shanghai on Thursdayyesterday, a senior Chinese official insisted it was a “symbol of fortune” in local culture.
“I would like to call this rain a rain of US dollars and renminbi,” said Wang Yang, one of China’s four vice-premiers.
Disney, alongside a Shanghai government company that owns 57 per cent of the park, has placed a big bet — its largest foreign investment — on the fast-growing middle class in China, which is spending ever more on travel and entertainment.
