David Cameron to stand down as PM after UK votes for Brexit

David Cameron is to stand down as prime minister after Britain voted to leave the EU in a referendum that has sent shockwaves across Europe and triggered financial market turmoil across the globe.

Mr Cameron said he would resign because Britain needed “fresh leadership” to take it in the new direction chosen by voters. He will stay in office for the next few months “to steady the ship”, with the Conservative party leader choosing his successor by October.

“I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers the country to its next destination,” he said outside 10 Downing Street.
