China replaces powerful internet chief

China’s outspoken internet tsar has stepped down, according to state media, but his replacement suggests no let-up in Beijing’s crackdown on online behaviour.

Lu Wei will leave his post as head of the Cyberspace Administration to be succeeded by his deputy Xu Lin, former minister of propaganda for Shanghai who joined the agency in 2015.

“Comrade Xu Lin is appointed the director of the Cyberspace Administration of China, Comrade Lu Wei will no longer hold the post,” Xinhua said on Wednesday, providing no further details.
