US President Barack Obama cut short a visit to Europe on Sunday to fly home into a tense debate over race, guns and police shootings of black men that has added more national anguish to a deeply polarised political climate.
Mr Obama will on Tuesday visit Dallas as the city mourns last week’s killing of five police officers by a black veteran of the war in Afghanistan, who told authorities before he was himself killed that he was angry about recent police shootings and wanted to kill “white people”.
The move came as protests against last week’s police shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana continued through the weekend, with police in a number of cities donning riot gear and arresting activists.
