Shinzo Abe will bide his time before pushing to change Japan’s constitution after an overwhelming victory in Sunday’s upper house elections.
As the final votes were counted, it became clear that Mr Abe and his allies had a supermajority in both houses of parliament, giving him a once-in-a-lifetime chance to change the pacifist constitution.
The prime minister signalled he would concentrate on the economy for now — pledging to launch a massive new fiscal stimulus — and try to build the political capital needed to tackle the constitution.
