Airbus is slashing production of its A380 superjumbo, which has struggled to win new customers amid a lacklustre market for widebody aircraft.
The group offered reassurance to employees that the impact on jobs of a cut from 27 deliveries in 2015 to just 12 by 2018 would be offset by the accelerated ramp-up in production on the midsized A350 and the popular A320 single-aisle family.
Nevertheless the scaling-back of an aircraft programme whose future has been in doubt for several years could prove costly for the European aircraft maker should it fail in its goal to break even on production.
