Frustrated with the slow progress on a sprawling, $46bn infrastructure project stretching from China to south Asia, Beijing is seeking to give Pakistan’s army a leading role in the initiative.
Its desire to enlist Pakistan’s military is a sign of the challenges facing a crucial plank of President Xi Jinping’s signature One Road, One Belt initiative. It was designed to increase China’s influence along the Silk Road and to help the country export some of its excess industrial capacity.
