Last week the head of China’s statistics bureau said the era of rising house prices had ended. Whether the latest data on housing prices agree with him depends on the basis for comparison.
Annualised prices for new residential homes rose in 58 out of 70 large and mid-size cities surveyed – up from 57 in June – and fell in 11; in monthly terms prices rose in 51 cities – down from 55 in June – and fell in 16, according to China’s National Bureau of Statistics.
Overall prices of new residential buildings rose 7.9 per cent year-on-year in July, according to a weighted average from Reuters based on the statistics bureau data, up from growth of 7.3 per cent in June.
