China’s crackdown on human rights lawyers continues. In a sign that anyone using the legal system to right judicial wrongs or defend human rights will themselves be punished, prominent lawyers and activists have been imprisoned for “subversion”.
They are among about 250 lawyers and activists
arrested in July 2015. While most were released, several were put on trial. They include the founder of the Fengrui law firm, Zhou Shifeng, jailed for seven years; his colleague, Zhai Yanmin, given a three-year suspended jail term; and activists Hu Shigen, jailed for seven years, and Gou Hongguo, given a three-year suspended sentence.
