Beijing voices frustration over Hinkley

Chinese officials spelt out their frustration at Britain’s decision to review the Hinkley Point nuclear project even as Theresa May, the prime minister, sought to play down its importance to good relations with China.

Mrs May and Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, had a “warm” first meeting at the G20 summit in Hangzhou, eastern China, according to British officials, and Mr Xi said he would be “patient” as Mrs May came to a decision on the future of the £18bn nuclear project.

Mr Xi said China would welcome a free-trade agreement with the UK after it left the EU and congratulated Britain’s Olympic team for pipping China to second place in the Rio medals table.
