Militants stormed an army base in India’s Kashmir region early on Sunday, killing 17 soldiers in an attack that has increased hostility between India and neighbouring Pakistan, and prompted calls for retaliation.
Indian army officials said that the deadliest assault on an Indian military installation in more than 15 years appeared to be the work of a Pakistan-based terrorist group, Jaish-e-Mohammad.
The four heavily-armed, highly-trained attackers were killed in a fierce, protracted gun battle, but officials said their equipment bore Pakistani markings.
