US defers Philippines aid after Duterte drug war claim

The US has held back poverty aid to the Philippines and declared itself deeply troubled by President Rodrigo Duterte’s latest claim that he personally hunted for suspects to kill in his bloody war on drugs.

Manila dismissed Washington’s block on funding as insignificant, especially given investor interest in Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing economy. 

The spat highlights the souring of relations between two traditional allies. Mr Duterte has bridled at criticism over human rights by President Barack Obama’s administration and has forged closer ties with Beijing.
