Isis claimed responsibility for an attack on a New Year’s Eve party at an Istanbul nightclub that left 39 people dead, casting the attack as an act of retaliation for Turkey’s military campaign in Syria.
The declaration marked a shift in tactics from the jihadi group, which has previously avoided formally claiming major attacks on western Turkish cities.
It follows repeated calls for attacks on Turkey by the Isis leadership and affiliated media outlets and comes as the group is battling international efforts to uproot it from its remaining territory in neighbouring Syria and Iraq.
