May to herald ‘clean Brexit’ and seek best tariff-free deal

Theresa May’s Europe speech in the splendour of Lancaster House, central London, today is her most significant attempt yet to define Brexit; there may not be a better definition before March, when she triggers Article 50 and starts the exit process.

Mrs May will herald a “clean Brexit”, signalling to the assembled diplomats and journalists that Britain will leave the single market, take back control of its borders and then try to secure the best possible tariff-free trade deal with the rest of Europe.

But it will also be a complex speech, attempting to reach four key audiences:
