British MPs applaud bar on address by Trump

President Donald Trump was in effect barred from addressing the Houses of Parliament during his forthcoming UK state visit after the Speaker of the Commons said he should be denied the opportunity because of his “racism and sexism”.

Foreign leaders including former US President Barack Obama, China’s Xi Jinping and Mexico’s Enrique Peña Nieto have all addressed MPs and peers in recent years.

However, John Bercow, the forthright Speaker of the Commons, said that he was “strongly opposed” to Mr Trump being offered a similar invitation. He added he was “even more strongly opposed” after the president’s executive order blocking certain migrants from entering the US.
