Trump’s China trademarks raise new ethics questions

Donald Trump faces new questions over his international business empire after China reportedly approved more than three dozen new trademarks for everything from Trump-branded hotels to bodyguard and concierge services.

The provisional approvals were granted by China’s trademark office on February 27 and on Monday for 38 new trademarks that the Trump Organisation applied for in April last year. Absent objections, they will be formally registered after 90 days, the Associated Press reported. Those approvals follow a decision last month by Chinese authorities to register a single trademark for Trump-branded construction services after a 10-year legal battle.

According to the AP, the new trademarks cover businesses that Mr Trump as long had interests in such as golf clubs, real estate companies and hotels. Also included were trademarks for a new “Scion” hotel brand launched by the president’s eldest sons that is meant to cater to a wider market.
