South Korea’s Moon Jae-in offers olive branch at inauguration

South Korea’s new President Moon Jae-in has used his inauguration to ease geopolitical tensions on the Korean peninsula, saying he is prepared to visit North Korea and to hold discussions with Washington and Beijing.

“I will quickly move to solve the crisis in national security,” the former human rights lawyer said in a ceremony at the national assembly, hours after his decisive victory with more than 41 per cent of the vote.

“I am willing to go anywhere for the peace of the Korean peninsula — if needed, I will fly immediately to Washington. I will go to Beijing and I will go to Tokyo. If the conditions shape up, I will go to Pyongyang,” he added.
