Trump’s steel import curbs could blow up global trade rules

There is no question that Donald Trump's mastery of Twitter has taken presidential interactions into a new era of mass communication. But, on his way back from last month's G7 meeting in Sicily, the US president had a tweet aimed at a more limited audience: trade wonks.

The “232 analysis” mentioned refers to Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 and to two investigations that the Trump administration launched earlier this year into imports of steel and aluminium.

The results of the steel investigation, according to administration officials, are expected to emerge as soon as this week. And with that Mr Trump is expected to act to restrict steel imports and to take what, for all his haranguing on trade so far, is likely to be his most significant protectionist action yet.
