Most Australians do not like US president Donald Trump and have less trust in America to “act responsibly” in world affairs, but they continue to support the US-Australian military alliance, a new survey shows.
The Lowy Institute Poll 2017 follows a turbulent period in US-Australian relations that saw Mr Trump declare his first phone conversation with Malcolm Turnbull, Australia’s prime minister, as his “worst call by far” with another leader.
However, fears that Mr Trump’s election would undermine public support for the relationship appear to be misplaced, with 77 per cent of respondents to the poll saying the 60-year-old alliance was important to Australia — up 6 percentage points on the previous year’s poll.
