American Airlines says Qatar Airways, a Middle Eastern rival criticised for unfair competition, has made an unsolicited bid for 10 per cent of the US carrier.
The Doha-based airline intended to take a stake of at least $808m, American said in a regulatory filing yesterday.
It came as Qatar is embroiled in a bitter dispute with Saudi Arabia, which has led a blockade of its neighbour with three other Arab allies, including the United Arab Emirates. Donald Trump, the US president, has backed Saudi accusations that Qatar, which hosts the biggest US military base in the region, sponsors terrorism.
