David Davis has urged fellow MPs to stop their “self-indulgent” leadership plotting as senior Tories consider ways to remove Theresa May and replace her with a more popular figurehead.
Sunday newspapers repeated growing speculation from Conservative MPs that Philip Hammond, the chancellor, could, in the event of a vacancy, run for the leadership on a double bill with Mr Davis.
That, they argued, could block the more divisive Boris Johnson, foreign secretary, from seizing the crown. It would only be a caretaker appointment to get the government past the complex Brexit negotiations which conclude in 2019.
