Macron hands Trump invite to Bastille Day celebrations

Donald Trump has accepted French President Emmanuel Macron’s invitation to attend Bastille Day ceremonies in Paris next month, weeks after the two leaders launched a tense first meeting with a knuckle-crushing handshake.

The invitation to the French national day celebrations on July 14, which this year also marks the 100th anniversary of the US entry into the first world war, was extended on Tuesday during a telephone conversation between them to prepare for the G20 summit in Germany on July 7-8.

The White House said President Trump looked forward to “reaffirming” US relations with France during his visit and to “build on the strong counter-terrorism co-operation and economic partnership”.
