Iraq’s prime minister Haider al-Abadi declared a “great victory” over Isis when he arrived in Mosul yesterday after eight months of brutal street-to-street battles that cost thousands of lives.
Hours after his arrival in Iraq’s second city, Mosul’s full recapture was yet to be announced, as Iraqi forces fought to take back the group’s final footholds.
Mr Abadi “congratulated the heroes and people of Iraq for accomplishing their great victory”, according to a statement published on his website. State news channel Iraqiya said the announcement of a total recapture was imminent, but air strikes and gunfire still shook the old city, where the militants have made their last stand.
