Ultimate Fighting Championship, the world’s biggest mixed martial arts league, will hold its first fight in mainland China, as it seeks a larger slice of the country’s vast sports market.
“We anticipate an exciting future in the China market,” said Joe Carr, UFC senior vice-president. The event in Shanghai in November will be jointly organised by the municipal sports bureau and will probably see Chinese-born fighters compete.
UFC, which reported revenues of $600m including merchandise in 2015, was acquired by US talent agency WME-IMG for $4bn last year. It is relatively late to China’s growing MMA market. Rival leagues such as Singapore’s One Championship and local tournament Kunlun Fight hold regular bouts in China.
